Overcoming Discouragement

It's hard to imagine a time when Tinuola Sowunmi wasn't an A-List Entrepreneur, but ten years ago he was a frustrated, a little-known entrepreneur who couldn't seem to breakthrough. Despite his prodigious talents and business prowess, as of his 35th birthday Tinuola Sowunmi could claim nothing more notable than a small scale business. Intensely discouraged, he turned to alcohol and quickly developed a dependency on drugs. Within a year, he hit rock bottom. When his wife and seven-year old daughter discovered him passed out on the kitchen floor, there was no denying that he had lost control.
After finding Tinuola Sowunmi unconscious, his wife Folake immediately checked him into a rehabilitation clinic. For the first time, Tinuola was forced to face up to his anger and discouragement, and he began to make gradual life changes. To his credit, he submitted himself to the recovery process, and with the encouragement of his family, friends and well-wishers; he was able to break his addiction. Less than twelve months later, he finally achieved stardom in his entrepreneurship career. From then on, his reputation grew steadily, and his career flourished. Today, he is regarded as one of Oyo’s finest and hardest-working business mogul.
What can we learn from Tinuola Sowunmi’s journey?
No one is immune to discouragement.
Regardless of your personality, potential, or position you will encounter discouragement at some point in life and in other area of your endeavours.
Our response to discouragement holds the key to our future.
I've noted two types of people in the world: Splatters and Bouncers. When splatters hit the bottom they land with their back and stick like glue. No matter what you try to say and do, there's no use trying to pick up a splatter that has fallen flat for they will not respond to the challenge positively. But, bouncers on the other hand, pull themselves together and rebound after hitting the bottom. Give them a little bit of encouragement, and they will ride it back to the top one more time.
Everyone who falters has a choice: are you going to get up or give up? The question is yours to proffer answers to. For, the difference between the Splatters and Bouncers lies in their attitude. I mean their personal perception of life. For, splatters bemoan their fate and blame others for their problems and failures. While bouncers learn fast from their failures and find supporters to help them recover.

Our influence can be pivotal in rescuing others from self-destructive discouragement.

Imagine if Tinuola Sowunmi had not been married or associated with well meaning people (friends and well-wishers). He might never have checked into rehab, he might never have beaten his drug and alcohol excesses, and the world might never have been so rich by his business acumen. Thankfully for Tinuola, he was surrounded by people who loved him and encouraged him as he recovered from substance abuse.
In leadership, inevitably you will cross paths with people that are downtrodden. When you do, your encouragement can be a lifeline to save or lift them from spiraling into self-destructive despair. Here are steps you can apply to counteract discouragement:
1) Guide Them to the Right Perspective

People who are discouraged oftentimes seem to be trapped under a black raincloud or shambles. Everywhere they turn appears to be dark, and they cannot see rays of light anywhere. As a leader, you can point to the positives and help them to keep hope alive. In addition, you can assist the discouraged person in properly interpreting setbacks. Remind them that just because they experienced failure doesn't mean they are a failure.
2) Connect Them to the Right People
You may encounter people whom you have limited ability to encourage because you can't relate to their area of discouragement. For instance, if you've never been in sales, it can be hard to cheer up a dispirited salesperson. However, within your network, you may know someone who has undergone similar frustrations in sales and would be glad to share some encouragement from his or her experience.
Also, the depth of someone's discouragement may necessitate professional assistance. In the middle of his alcohol and drug addiction, Tinuola Sowunmi didn't need a pep talk from a buddy as much as he needed medical care and attention from a licensed counselor. Sometimes the best service you can do for someone who has hit rock bottom is to persuade him or her to get help – I mean professional help.
3) Restore Them with the Right Words
Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones, at onetime the greatest heart surgeon in England, says this in his excellent work, Spiritual Depression, its Cause and Cure: and I quote, "Most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself rather than talking to yourself." Think about it. When you're discouraged, you wake up in the morning and right away, there are streams of thought coming into your mind. You haven't invited them; you didn't ask for them; you are not consciously doing anything to produce them; they just come! They start talking to you.
As a leader, you can help people filter unfounded fears and unwarranted worries from their inner dialogue. After doing so, you have the opportunity to speak affirming and encouraging words that can take the place of negative thoughts. Once people change their thinking, their attitudes and actions eventually follow.
I will like to conclude with this piece, regardless of your personality, potential, or position you will encounter discouragement at some point in life but I charge you to develop and get your mind set and you shall overcome no matter what happened.
You will make IMPACT!!!

The Force of Creative Visualization

Recently, I wrote on “Beyond Positive Thinking in 2012”, as one of the tools and techniques that guarantee greatness and success in any field of human endeavour. But today, I deemed it fit to bring to you this article “The Force of Creative Visualization which is the act of using your mind and natural creative imagination to actually manifest those things that you wish to achieve most in your life. Over the years this has been seen as a powerful technique that has the tendency to turn the life of every man around for good. It is ones ability to bring about wonderful events, circumstances and accomplishments in one’s life just by thinking about them and creating a true, strong and vivid picture of what it is you desire and building on your inner strength to pursue such pictures and images.
Creative visualization is more than just positive thinking, it has to do with you going deeper into your mind to find out facts that were inside of you for many years through the relaxing state of your mind which can only happen through what I called ‘silent visualization’.
The very act of creative visualization brings about wonderful events in one’s life which occurs without you being aware. Some people call it coincidence but there is no such thing as coincidence in this world. We are responsible for what happens to us, with us, through us and by us. In fact, all that happens throughout our lives. That is to say, if you must enjoy true greatness and success in this year 2012, then you must make yourself open to Creative Visualization. One of the acceptable tools and techniques that can help you to tap into the picture that makes up your future and it can also help guarantee the reality of your dreams.
Our brain and mind are the most powerful forces on this Earth and the more we learn to use them to our positive advantage the better our lives can be. Like Winston Churchill said long time ago, that if a man makes a decision to do anything, heaven and earth will join force to make it happen.
It is in agreement with the above that, I began using the tools of creative visualization over ten years ago and it has just become a natural part of my everyday life and also at the same time serve as a fuel to the direction of my dreams, passion and vision and helping me to build upon my positive mental attitude for success. This works because it keeps me focused on thinking of things that I truly desire in my life and this in turn keeps me consistently working towards the actualization of that which I want most in life.
When I get out of bed in the morning I focus as hard as I can on a particular major goal I have set for myself. I visualize the achievement of that goal in complete detail and beforehand I see them happen in totality and reality. Throughout the process of the visualization I remain completely relaxed and just focus all my energy on the actualization of my visualization.
Once you have chosen your desire, object or event you want in life, visualize them as clearly as possible. Imagine it as though it has already occurred, exactly as you want it to be. Focus on them with all your emotions and visualize it as clearly and as vividly as you possibly can.
By using creative visualization you are sending a signal out into the universe and that signal will attract whatever positive events you want into your life. This has been passed down throughout history, it is called “The Law of Attraction” and it does not discriminate, it works the same for everyone. This is based on the fact that, when you send out positive, I mean expectant positive thoughts positive circumstances will begin to appear in your life that will help spur you to the actualization of what you have focused your mind on.
My advice is; keep all negative thoughts from entering your mind for this can destroy the entire visualization process. Your subconscious mind will not act on anything positive if there are negative thoughts associated with it in anyway. Only until you try to erase such negative thoughts from your thought system.
Take control of that inner voice within your mind and see to it that all your self-talk are positive. For Creative Visualization can help to bring about a true sense of peace and tranquility. It is a very positive act which can leave you filled with positive emotions that can lead you to your dreamland.
Congratulations!!!

Beyond Positive Thinking in 2012

For years I practiced positive thinking and it had wonderful effects on my personal drive and performance. But it was when I truly went beyond positive thinking into positive acting and positive knowing that brought about positive personal development in my life.
Taking these steps to improve your self-image is taking a step beyond positive thinking. You are showing that you have a true desire to see some change in the way you live your life and in your thought process.
Every time I took a step forward I felt terrific inside. I was showing myself that I had the strength to overcome the obstacles that tried to get in my way and at the same time make the best out of them.
If you have a poor opinion of yourself, it had an adverse effect on your self-esteem and concept which in turn bring low your performance and productivity level. This is when you need to go beyond positive thinking and take a good hard look at your beliefs.
To go beyond positive thinking you have to work on every aspect of personal development. The most important being the self-image. Your self-image is made up of the confidence you hold in yourself and your self definition which in turn affects your self-esteem. That is why it’s so imperative to have a strong understand of all aspects of your personal development as they are all so closely related and each one affects the other.
Our self-esteem and our self-image are closely connected. Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself and self-image is how you see yourself. This is what makes up the differences of people in society, for some their self-image has been molded and shaped in a very positive way. Yet for others it can be drastically damaged through destructive criticism received throughout their childhood.

Take Actions to Go Beyond Positive Thinking
You should be practicing the use of affirmations and positive self-talk but you must go beyond positive thinking to the point that you start to take some real action. Actions in the right direction that can also at the same time spur you to success and greatness. Do what I did and refuse to give in to the challenges life throws at you. Try something as easy as listening to audio programs that are motive-inspirational driven and reading books of timely truth and reality.
I have found more strength in using these audio programs and motive-inspirational books and resources. Of course without my true friends, team players and partners to lean on, I am not sure what impact any of these programs and resource (books) would have had on me.
If you have negative beliefs about anything having to do with yourself it is imperative that you do what you can to change those beliefs.

Here are 5 Ways to go Beyond Positive Thinking to Help Improve Your Self-Image in 2012.
1.) Focus strongly on the positive events that have taken place in your life.
2.) Think about the compliments that people give you and write them down. You are keeping a journal of all the positives that has ever happens in your life....RIGHT?
3.) Take on something that really challenges you------you might just really surprise yourself.
4.) Make some changes about yourself such as getting a new hair cut or buying some new clothes or even try a different behavior.
5.) Make list of things you like about yourself that include things such as; appearance, personality, skills, traits and other attributes that you take pride in.
6.) Try reading or listening to something motivational , something that will make you feel good and help you to look at life a little differently.
7.) Help someone else out. This can help you feel good about yourself and boost your self-esteem and thus your self-image. And at the same time try something new, something you never tried before like self-hypnosis and evaluations.
Taking these steps to improve your self-image is taking a step beyond positive thinking. You are showing that you have a true desire to see some change in the way you live your life.
